MSSc in Global Political Economy (MGPE)

All courses are taught in English.

MGPE is a renowned interdisciplinary programme that features the concept of “global” by linking closely global trends with local dynamics. It is directly applicable to the financial and management world, and offers timely and integrative knowledge to students on issues covering global politics and global economy.

Apart from its professional, experienced and committed teaching team, the Programme also provides opportunities for its students to acquire social capital through its unique writing assignment scheme. The optional field study, tentatively to be organized in summer adds values to the MGPE Studies by allowing students to testify their knowledge learnt in class in practical terms.

The University has a policy on course/unit exemption, and requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. However, unit exemption for this Programme is usually not allowed. It is considered contrary to the aim of the Programme, which is to widen the knowledge base of the students.

All students should fulfill the English Language Proficiency Requirement prescribed below before they are admitted:

• Obtain a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:
• Hong Kong Advanced Level Exam (including AS Level);
• Hong Kong Higher Level Exam;
• CUHK Matriculation Exam;
• General Certificate of Educational Exam (GCE) Advanced Level (A-Level)/Advanced-Subsidiary Level (AS-Level); or

Interview may be arranged for short-listed applicants, who will be informed individually.

Applicants can login the “Online System for Applications for Admission to Postgraduate Programmes” to check their application results from time to time. Admitted applicants will be notified of the update of application status by Graduate School as soon as the selection process is completed. However, there may be several rounds of selection, the process may span over several months.

Entrance scholarship will be offered to qualified students on a competitive basis. No application is required. The awarded students will be notified individually.

According to University Policy, deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable.

Applicants only need to upload scanned copy of the required supporting documents which are already available to the Online Application System at the application stage. Hard copy of the required supporting documents are only needed to be mailed to the Programme Office when the applicant has received an admission offer.

Official e-transcripts issued and sent directly from the university registry (or equivalent university transcript office) to our Programme are acceptable. Please note the e-transcripts issued and sent from your Faculty/School/Department/Programme are not acceptable.    

Applicants can amend the information via the online application system. If you would like to provide us with the updated transcript or other supporting documents, please upload the scanned official copy to the online application system. 

The assessment methods depend on the nature of each course and the decision of the lecturer(s). Normally, there will be an examination and/or a writing assignment at the end of each course. This Programme does not require a graduation thesis.

Classes will be conducted in CUHK campus only.

All courses will be scheduled on weekday evening or Saturday.

There are two terms in each academic year. Each term lasts for 13 to 14 weeks.

1. 1. 1. What should I do once I receive the admission offer?You should indicate if you accept the admission offer. To complete the acceptance of admission offer, please settle the deposit by the payment due date stated on Admission Notification. Then, please follow the steps in How to Register? to register provisionally. In such a situation, your student status is not yet confirmed and you will NOT be allowed to commence to study until you have fulfilled all the condition(s) by the deadline stipulated on the Admission Notification.

1. 2. I am studying at a university in Hong Kong and will graduate in this academic year. Should I apply a new student visa for studying the MGPE programme?Yes, you have to apply a new student visa.

1. 1. If I have already got an employment visa, do I have to apply for a student visa in order to study the part-time programme?
       
      No, you don’t have to apply for a student visa, but you have to present your employment visa to the Graduate School as soon as you receive the admission offer. Please make sure your visa is valid during the entire study period.

Due to limited hostel places, no on-campus accommodation is provided for students taking self-financed taught programmes or part-time programmes. Students shall locate off-campus accommodation by themselves. Further information can be found at the website of Office of Students Affairs.
