Professor Wilson Wong, MPUP Programme Director, has been invited to join the new research network, “AI for Social Good” jointly formed by the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia (UN ESCAP) with the aim to collectively develop evidence and cross-border connections on “AI for Social Good” to promote an enabling policy environment at the domestic and international levels and inform overall ecosystem development for artificial intelligence (AI).
Professor Wong is among the 8 scholars across the Asia-Pacific region being invited to join the network for the initial project to conduct research on how AI can positively transform economies and societies, which has not been extensively researched. A collection of research-based policy recommendation papers will be developed and published by the scholars on formulation of policies and strategies supporting and maximizing AI for Social Good. The papers are expected to be published in June 2020 and widely disseminated to policymakers, experts and external organisations for their utilization of the research results to develop partnerships to grow and sustain the use of AI for Social Good.

Aspiring to nurture future leaders in society, MPUP invites professional practitioners from various public policy sectors from time to time to share their experience and insights with students.
Thanks to the coordination by Dr Mark Michelson, teacher of MPUP5331 Government and the Economy, Mr. Mike Rowse, former government official and founder of InvestHK, was invited to share about his 30-year public administration career in Hong Kong while witnessing the rapid development of infrastructure in his former positions, during the MPUP5331 class on 9 March 2020 (Mon).
Mr. Rowse kick-started the session by sharing his early career as a journalist for The Star (HK tabloid) covering news stories about corruption and crime when he first came to Hong Kong, followed by his experience with the Hong Kong ICAC and the HKSAR Government as an Administrative Officer. He was then made the first Director of the Financial Secretary from 1997 to 2000, and the first Commissioner for Tourism from 1999 to 2000. With his experience in negotiating the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort deal on behalf of the HKSAR Government in which the Government became the park’s largest shareholder, Mr. Rowse also gave insights on the issue of whether the HKSAR Government should have participated in the development of the Hong Kong Disneyland.
Despite the fact that the sharing session was organized in the form of webinar via Zoom due to the COVID-19 outbreak, students enjoyed Mr. Rowse’s insightful sharing and grasped the opportunity to exchange ideas with Mr. Rowse during the Q&A session.
On 6 March 2020 (Fri) and 20 March 2020 (Fri), MPUP co-organized the HKSAR Government Administrative Officer (AO) and Executive Officer (EO) Alumni Experience Sharing Sessions with the Career Planning and Development Centre of the Office of Student Affairs, CUHK in the form of webinar via Zoom for students to familiarize themselves with the job nature of the two positions and to learn about strategic approaches throughout the recruitment process.
Three guest speakers who are serving/former AOs, namely Ms. Suzanna Leung, Mr. Cyrus Chow and Mr. Samuel Lai (MPUP alumnus) for the AO Alumni Experience Sharing Session, and two guest speakers who are serving EOs, namely Ms. Jelly Cheung (MPUP alumna) and Ms. Cordelia Hau (MPUP current student) for the EO Alumni Experience Sharing Session, shared about their job duties in various government units and offered tips and insights about the preparation for the upcoming interviews based on their personal experience.
Despite the Sharing Sessions have been conducted in the form of webinar for the first time, each Session attracted over 100 CUHK undergraduate and postgraduate students from various disciplines. During the Q & A sessions, students showed great interests in joining the Government and learnt more from the guest speakers regarding the core values, mindset and career path of the positions.
On 13 March 2020 (Fri) and 20 March 2020 (Fri), MPUP co-organized two Career Workshops, one on CV and Cover Letter Writing and another one on Interview Skills with the Independent Learning Centre (ILC), CUHK in the form of webinar via Zoom exclusively for students of the Department of Government and Public Administration to equip them with the essential job search skills.
Dr Karl Holm, an experienced trainer from the ILC was invited to host the Workshops to offer participants some tips and strategies in planning for their job search. Despite Dr Holm acquired a PhD in Biology at the Evolutionary Biology Centre at Uppsala University (Sweden), he also received a MEd in English and Swedish Languages and Literature at Stockholm University (Sweden) and possessed 15 years of experience in teaching English to international undergraduate and postgraduate students. Before joining the ILC, Dr. Holm worked in the private education industry in Hong Kong where he mainly focused on course content development, teacher training and evaluation.
During the Workshops, participants grasped the opportunity to consult Dr Holm for his professional advice on polishing their CV and Cover Letter and preparing for upcoming job interviews.
