At the invitation of Mr Tang Fei, an alumnus of the Department of GPA and a current member of the Legislative Council, students of the two master’s programmes of MPUP and GPGC visited the Legislative Council on 1 March (Friday). Mr. Tang has been involved in the education industry for many years. He has served as a secondary school principal, assisting in the Curriculum Reform in New Senior Secondary Education, and has also hosted countless lectures and seminars for education reform topics. In 2013, he was awarded the Medal of Honour of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
On the day of the visit, Mr. Tang first gave a detailed introduction to the history of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong in the History Gallery, then took a group photo with the participants, and then led the participants to visit the main venues including the Legislative Council Chamber. During the one-and-a-half-hour guided tour, Mr. Tang broadened students’ horizons and stimulated their interest in exploring the history of Hong Kong’s political system with his rich knowledge and insights on modern Chinese history and Hong Kong history

On April 27, after a week of rain, the sky finally cleared. Professor Zhan Jing, Professor Tsao King Kwun and about 20 GPGC students went on an outing to the tranquil fishing village of Tai O. We first visited a cozy, family-style workshop to learn more about the process of making shrimp paste. Next, we traveled through Shek Tsai Po and visited Hung Shing Temple and Tin Hau Temple. We then walked along the coastline up the hill to the Tai O Heritage Hotel. The Tai O Heritage Hotel was revitalised from the old Tai O Police Station and still retains traces of the arrest chamber and prison cells. In the fresh and pleasant sea breeze, we climbed along the picnic trail to Tiger Mountain, overlooking the magnificent Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
At lunchtime, students and teachers gathered to taste local dishes and silky tofu puddings. After a full meal, everyone joined a workshop to make tea cakes. At about 4 o’clock in the afternoon, we returned with good memories.

On the sunny and inviting Friday morning of 30 Aug 2024, forty-nine GPGC students gathered on campus for their first meeting at the heartwarming Orientation.
After a welcoming remark from Professor Pierre Landry, the Director of the School of Governance and Policy Science, Professor Vivian Zhan, GPGC’s Program Director, introduced the programme and encouraged the students to embrace H.O.P.E. – High aspiration, Open mind, Professionalism, and Exploration.
The event continued with introductions from GPGC faculty members. Mr. Ivan Choy, Prof. Mark Michelson, and Dr. Mohid Iftikhar were present in person, with Dr. James Downes conveying his good wishes through pre-recorded videos.
Following this, Dr. Brenda Liu, the Programme Manager, shared valuable advice on postgraduate studies at CUHK and answered students’ questions in the Q&A session. The Programme Management Committee presented six Admission Scholarships before the session concluded.
The Orientation ended with a welcoming lunch at the Chung Chi Staff Club, where teachers and students shared delicious foods, exchanged ideas, and fostered bonding.
We wish all GPGC students a fruitful academic year ahead!

We are delighted to welcome Professor Gunter Schubert back to CUHK! On 9 October 2024, Professor Schubert presented his research on semiconductors and global industrial chains, “Geopolitics, Semiconductors, and China’s Quest for High-Tech Autonomy,” to faculty and students at the School of Government and Policy Sciences at CUHK.
The event, followed by an Admission Q&A Session for MSSc in Government and Politics (Greater China) and MSSc in Public Policy, drew approximately 90 participants who attended either in person or online. Please enjoy the event photos and Q&A session video below.

Last weekend (November 24, 2024), led by Class Representatives, GPGC students gathered at the Tai Mei Tuk Barbecue to strengthen their connection and communication with each other. Professor Zhan Jing, the Director of the GPGC Programme, gave five presentations in five days last week, from Sun Yat-sen University and South China University of Technology in the Pearl River Delta to Shanghai Jiaotong University, Fudan University and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology in the Yangtze River Delta. Professor Zhan’s speech focused on the theme of “How China Contained the Resource Curse: Mineral Resources and the Relationship between State, Capital and Labor,” and introduced the research questions, research methods, and key findings of her monograph on the same topic published by Cambridge Press in 2022. Among the experts and scholars attending the meeting were doctoral graduates from the Department of Government and Public Administration of CUHK. Thanks to the part-time students of GPGC and the Office of Hon Chan Chun-ying, students from GPGC and MPUP visited the Legislative Council on 17 February (Monday) under the guidance of Professor Zhan Jing. On the day of the visit, led by Hon Chan Chun-ying and the docent, the teachers and students visited the Council Chamber, the History Gallery, the Media Centre, etc., and took a group photo with Mr. Chan. During the more than one-hour activity, the docents introduced the history and current situation of the Legislative Council to the students with his rich knowledge and experience, and Mr. Chan also had a cordial exchange with the students on the daily work of the members.
