Presentation Title: Curriculum Innovation for the Challenge of Digital Transformation:
Integrating Data Science with Policy Studies
Speakers: Professor Wilson Wong
Programme Co-Director,
Data Science and Policy Studies,
The Chinese University of Hong KongDr. Man Fung Lo
Lecturer,
Data Science and Policy Studies,
The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Presentation Abstract

This presentation shows how we can design a new curriculum to offer students the knowledge and capacities as future leaders to take up the challenge of digital transformation under a new world order of emerging and disruptive technologies. It starts with a critical examination of the problems and limitations of many existing and traditional curriculums which lead to a polarization of technical-oriented programmes vs. non-technical programme and a dual gap in knowledge and education. The presentation should provide insights on how to critically redesign our curriculum for educating our new generation to thrive into the job market of the future and master the new wave of digital transformation – the ability to tap on technologies to create new values in organizations, policies, and society. It would use the programme of Data Science and Policy Studies (DSPS) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a case to generate transferable lessons.

To be data-literate, ultimately, is to have the knowledge to use data in a way that improves your life while not being enslaved by technology.

在數據年代安身立命,說穿了就是懂得用數據改善生活而不受科技奴役。

Professor Wilson Wong, our DSPS Co-Director, was interviewed in the latest issue of The CUHK Bulletin, which dedicated the entire issue to the important topic of AI. In the interview, Professor Wong shared his insights and observations of the impact of AI on society, both the opportunities and the threats.

Our DSPS programme equips students with policy analysis and data analytical skills to solve real-world problems and make significant impacts on the community. Our year-two student, Mr. Chow Kin Long (first from the right on the photo), took up the role as the Project Officer of a recent policy research project on the urban renewal of Yau Mong District. The objectives are to gather residents’ opinions on urban renewal and to investigate the challenges faced by them. Major methods of the project involve home visiting and reporting the concerns about the urban renewal of the residents. Its findings receive wide and significant attention by the mass media as follows:

Our DSPS lecturer, Dr. Kelvin Lo, was invited to the workshop organized by Krew Digital as a guester speaker and a judge. As a top agency fueled with data driven analytic tools, Krew Digital is devoted to promote digital marketing and the use of Big Data and technological innovation. The workshop provides insightful perspectives and hands-on experience to students from the Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College and Rhenish Church Pang Hok Ko Memorial College. Dr. Lo gave a talk to the students about the overview of university data science education and data science applications in Hong Kong. For more information about Krew Digital and the workshop, please view via the following links:

The CUHK team (ICT Power) led by our DSPS student, Miranda Ding (second from the right), and coached by our DSPS lecturer, Dr. Kelvin Lo, won the second prize in the Huawei ICT Competition.
